About

Monica Galetti is one of the most well-known chefs in the UK. She is a judge on Masterchef: The Professionals and owner of Mere in London.

Monica was born in Samoa and developed an early interest in food, training as a chef in New Zealand.

In the early 1990s Monica studied for a diploma in hospitality at the Central Institute of Technology in Upper Hutt. After completing her studies, she worked at Lower Hutt restaurant Timothy’s. The owner there saw her potential and urged her to enter cooking competitions.

Own Restaurant

Monica moved to London in 1999 for a position as a junior chef at Michel Roux’s two Michelin-starred restaurant Le Gavroche. She worked hard to climb the kitchen ladder to become senior sous-chef and held the position until 2015.

Then, in 2017, she branched out on her own and opened her debut restaurant Mere. The restaurant has received critical acclaim and the food blends classical French with South Pacific influences. Nestled above the spacious basement restaurant is the bar, which serves an array of cocktails.

Personality/Celebrity

Aside from her cooking career, Monica is a familiar face on television. She has been a judge on MasterChef: The Professionals since 2009 and hosts Amazing Hotels: Life Beyond The Lobby alongside restaurant critic Giles Coren.

Monica’s first cookbook, Monica’s Kitchen, published by Quadrille, hit the shelves in 2012. Her second book, The Skills, offers both amateur chefs and professionals 20 key cooking skills as well as 100 fabulous recipes.
