About

Radio presenter Jen Long has been named an Ambassador for Youth Music.

Jen joins Bill Bailey, Myleene Klass and others as Ambassadors for the charity which provides life-changing music opportunities for over 100,000 children and young people every year.

She says, ‘I’m delighted to become an Ambassador for Youth Music. From my own personal experience, I know how hard many aspiring musicians have to work to develop their craft and get noticed. Youth Music helps thousands of young people every year, providing them with opportunities to learn and make music. Very importantly, they work across all music genres, giving young people a real chance to develop their musical interests. I’m particularly passionate about encouraging young women to get involved in music and choose it as a career option as I feel we are under-represented in the industry.’

Jen Long was named one of the most influential young voices in music by Q Magazine in 2012. Her career has spanned playing in bands, promoting gigs, tour-managing, DJing, music journalism and running a record label. As well as managing the band, Cut Ribbons, she edits the quarterly music magazine, Zero Core, and runs her own record label, Kissability, in partnership with independent record label, Transgressive.

Matt Griffiths, Executive Director, Youth Music, said: ‘We are thrilled that Jen has agreed to become one of our Ambassadors. Having already worked in so many different aspects of the music business, she is a fantastic role model for young people looking to develop a career in the industry. She is also a great advocate for women working in the music business. 51% of those taking part in Youth Music projects are girls and young women. We agree with Jen that the music industry should reflect a more equal gender balance.’

Matt Griffiths’ article, Youth Music – ringing the changes, which reflects on his first 12 months as Executive Director of Youth Music, recent changes in music education and where he sees the charity going in the near future, will be published later this month in Issue 5 of Music Education UK magazine (Spring/Summer 2013).
