The Match Point actor says, ‘What I like about Hogan, it is elegant and timeless, as well as casual, and that goes with everything.’

Question & Answers with Matthew Goode:

-You’re now the frontman of Hogan. What are your three essential shoe styles?
Matthew Goode: I need wellington boots for dog walking with the kids in the park. Then an evening pair of shoes when I have to occasionally look smart at premieres – I tend to go for a black oxford or patent if I’m wearing a tux. Finally a pair of trainers to wear with my jeans – I have a pair coming from Hogan’s new collection quite shortly. I like the fact that Hogan’s shoes all have this sporty sole that is great even for an older man with a bad back like me.

-You’re only 35…
You spend some time raising a child in London, carrying it around on one side of your body – it puts your back out! Anyway, less about my chiropractor bills…

-This whole collection is about “formality without being formal”. What’s your key to pulling off “smart casual”?
I’m quite conservative, so just a pair of skinny jeans, a great pair of shoes and a blazer. Not the kind of blazer you go to the golf club in, mind. Navy blue, with a polo shirt underneath or a white T-shirt.

-Have you ever picked up any tips from stylists on films? Your wardrobe was incredible in Stoker…
Yes, that was really good wasn’t it? Actually because the budget on that film wasn’t great some of those clothes had to be sent back. I did get to keep two pink Prada shirt – which are absolutely fantastic – but the funny thing is that when they’re not worn with the clothes I was wearing in the film, they look sort of like you’re wearing flesh. Lovely cut shirts, though.

-Do you remember your first stylish purchase?
It was a suit, a pair of shoes… in fact the whole works from Paul Smith when I was about 24. I needed to go to the opera to take out a new girlfriend. I think I blew pretty much my first decent pay cheque on it. You’ve gotta love Paul!

-So rather appropriately – considering we’re in Italy – you’ve been working on a TV pilot called The Vatican…
Indeed, directed by Ridley Scott. Well most of that was filmed on sound stages in London, but the crew did get a private tour of the crypt before we did. We were shooting just before the previous Pope abdicated, so the central character is a German Pope who may or may not die in the series at some point. Ridley is without a doubt the coolest man you’ll ever meet. I’m not going to give away his age, but he could definitely get a Freedom Pass. Then I’m doing a film with my mate Benedict [Cumberbatch] and Keira Knightly called The Imitation Game about Bletchley Park and breaking the Enigma code. In fact it’s more about Turing’s life and how as a nation we celebrated him as being a hero by chemically castrating him because he was gay. I play Hugh Alexander, who was initially at loggerheads with Turing, but eventually they become very close friends. We haven’t started shooting yet, but I think Benedict’s going to be extraordinary – loath as I am to say that! Oh my God…!

[Interview briefly interrupted as Goode fawns over a baby being carried by]

Sorry, I’m a bit of a baby man. I’m about to have another one in September; my second. I think we’re just going to chop [my penis] off after this and use it as a paperweight. You’ve got to admit, though, for the modern man a baby is the latest accessory. I like how stylish Italian guys bring their entire families to fashion shows over here…

-Who is your best-dressed British man?
William Gilchrist. He’s the most stylish man I’ve ever met. I think he could wear a bin bag and still look incredible. He’s also just a really good bloke. He’s got a twinkle in his eye; he’s like a London pirate.
