Barry McGuigan

Barry rose to fame in the 1980s as WBA featherweight boxing champion and a non-sectarian sporting ambassador. He has worked as a Daily Mirror columnist and TV sports commentator, having also been the winner of ITV’s Hells Kitchen reality show in 2007.

Barry McGuigan (Finbarr Patrick McGuigan MBE) won a multitude of titles as a junior. At the age of just 17 he represented Northern Ireland at the 1978 Commonwealth Games, winning the gold medal, and he also represented Ireland at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. As a Professional he won the British, European and World Titles.

McGuigan was voted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 2000 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2005.

Barry has also been writing a successful weekly column for the Daily Mirror for over 10 years. He has commentated throughout the world; in the USA for Prime Network, in Asia for Star TV, in Europe with EuroSport and in the UK for BBC, Sky, Screen Sport, Setanta, Wire TV and ITV

In 2007 Barry became a successful television star winning the ITV prime-time show Hell’s Kitchen. He also recently presented a cooking show called The Fabulous Food Adventure in Northern Ireland with the chef and author Jenny Bristow.

Barry is also President and Founder of the Professional Boxing Association (PBA), an organisation set up to protect the interests and promote education and skills development for professional boxers.

In November 2009 McGuigan launched the inaugural Barry McGuigan Boxing Academy. The intention of the academy is to use the skill and discipline required in boxing to promote and deliver an environment where young people can excel in their academic and sporting goals.

Barry is a great character and a top motivational speaker.
