Mayor of Camden Jonathan Simpson supports Amy Winehouse Foundation

Councillor Jonathan Simpson, Camden Council‘s new mayor, has selected the Amy Winehouse Foundation as his charity for the year.

Re-elected on May 15th 2013, after the council’s annual meeting, the Mayor will help raise funds for the charity, which seeks to provide a schools drug and alcohol education awareness programme called the Resilience Programme. Speaking after his election, Simpson stated: “Amy Winehouse was a popular figure in Camden and leaves a lasting legacy. The Foundation are a fantastic cause and I not only look forward to raising much needed funds for their work, but also supporting their aim of increasing drug and alcohol education to young people.”

Mitch Winehouse, father of the late singer and chair of the foundation, said ‘Jonathan has been incredibly supportive of our work with young people and we are absolutely delighted that he has chosen the Amy Winehouse Foundation as his charity for the year. We very much look forward to working with him and his team’.

Meanwhle, Councillor Simpson’s Mayoress for the coming year has been named as Puppini Sisters vocalist Marcella Puppini. “I am incredibly honoured to be asked to be by Jonathan’s side as Mayoress of Camden,” she said. “Camden is famous around the world because of its wonderful music heritage. I greatly admire Jonathan’s passion and beliefs, and am truly looking forward to helping promote the local thriving music scene”.

Camden Council gave the go-ahead to plans to install a statue of late singer Amy Winehouse in the borough. Artist Scott Easton’s sculpture of the ‘Back To Black’ singer has been in the works for some time but, according to the Camden New Journal, Camden Town Conservation Authority had stated its opposition to the proposal. However, after a meeting, local councillors approved the project and the statue will now be installed at a balcony at Camden’s Roundhouse venue in  September 2013.
