Damien Hirst collaborates with Alexander McQueen

British artist Damien Hirst has collaborated with Alexander McQueen on a limited edition scarf collection, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the iconic skull scarf, available mid-November 2013 at Alexander McQueen stores worldwide and online.

Each of the 30 pieces in the collection are one-off designs and are adapted from Hirst’s Entomology series.

The skull-print scarves first were worn by the fash-pack back 2003 – Kate Moss, Sienna Miller and Elle MacPherson to name but a few – and now the number one accessory is set to return, bugs and all.

Damien Hirst morphs his ‘Entomology’ series of kaleidoscopic artwork with butterflies and creepy crawlies into McQueen shaped skulls to create anything but creepy, beautiful pieces, to celebrate the number one accessory. He was chosen as a collaborator thanks to his ‘interest in symmetrical design is combined with strong references to the natural world.’

Since McQueen showcased the scarves during his Spring/Summer 2003 collection, anybody and everybody fell in love with them, even more so when the beloved designer died in 2010.

Known for his outlandish collections and spectacularly bizarre runway shows, the silk scarf became a statement piece with price tags of £165 making McQueen more accessible.

The new fabrics will range from chiffon and pongé to twill and luxurious cashmere, so it’s no surprise they are priced this time from £315. We think it’s time to start saving up the pennies (and the pounds!) so we can get our hands on one of these.

Expect to see their creations in mid-November 2013 exclusive to Alexander McQueen boutiques and at and alexandermcqueen.com.

Alexander McQueen was a British fashion designer and couturier. He is known for having worked as chief designer at Givenchy from 1996 to 2001 and for founding his own Alexander McQueen label. His achievements in fashion earned him four British Designer of the Year awards (1996, 1997, 2001 and 2003), as well as the CFDA’s International Designer of the Year award in 2003.

Damien Hirst is the most prominent member of the group known as the Young British Artists (or YBAs), who dominated the art scene in Britain during the 1990s. He is internationally renowned, and is reportedly Britain’s richest living artist, with his wealth valued at £215m in the 2010 Sunday Times Rich List. During the 1990s his career was closely linked with the collector Charles Saatchi, but increasing frictions came to a head in 2003 and the relationship ended.
