Celia Birtwell creates collection for Uniqlo

British textile designer Celia Birtwell has joined forces with Japanese global retailer Uniqlo to create a capsule collection of t-shirts, tunic vests, jeggings, dresses, shorts and tote bags. Celia is a British textile designer whose success has made her an iconic figure on the global arts scene.

The collection, featuring Birtwell’s signature colourful bold prints, hits UK stores March 21st 2013. Orla Kiely and Lulu Guinness have previously produced collaborative collections for the brand.

Celia Birtwell is famed for her collaborative work with fashion designer Ossie Clark, together they represented epitome of 1960s and 70s style. As the long-term muse of artist David Hockney, her portrait “Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy”, is one of the Tate gallery’s most famous paintings.

The British designer, now 71-years-old, has teamed up with the Japanese label to create a spring collection full of her iconic colourful prints. Celia’s famous archive prints have been re-imagined, re-scaled, re-worked and re-coloured into an exclusive range of T-shirts, tunic vests, shirts, jeggings, pyjama pants, culottes, and tote bags.

Her skilfully juxtaposed prints have clothed celebrities through the decades including the Rolling Stones, Beatles, Hendrix, Pink Floyd, in addition to Marianne Faithfull, Bianca Jagger, Paloma Picasso and many more.

Random, yet precise attention to detail makes for a unique sense of timeless style.

Celia comments: “Most things in my life just come along. There was interest a couple of years ago but I was very well looked after this time and it really grew into something.

“I flew to Japan and we selected several prints, particularly from my home collection, which I never thought you could use but I am surprised and delighted with everything.”

The Spring/Summer collection launches into stores in March 2013 and combines British Heritage with modern Japanese global style. The collection is set to be just as popular as Birtwell’s collaborations with Topshop and John Lewis.
