BBC News at 6 and 10 appoints new editor Paul Royall

Paul Royall has been announced as the new Editor of BBC News at Six and BBC News at Ten, after acting as Deputy Editor for the programmes for the past four years.

He has already held posts as deputy and assistant editor on the BBC One bulletins, and worked on stories including London 2012 and the riots in England two years ago.

He was also involved in shaping the bulletin’s coverage of foreign news, such as the Arab uprisings, and has been executive producer of the monthly programme BBC News: The Editors.

Mary Hockaday, head of the BBC Newsroom, said Royall would bring “his deep editorial experience and television production flair to BBC One’s flagship news bulletins”.

After starting in newspapers, he moved to the regional ITV Meridian programme in southern England.

He then joined the BBC when News 24 started in 1997 and he has also been deputy editor at BBC Breakfast.

Royall, who starts his new role July 22nd 2013, said ‘I’m thrilled to be asked to lead these outstanding programmes. Their quality and consistency are evident every day. They are the most watched, with our audiences central to what we do’.

He replaces James Stephenson, who was recently appointed as head of BBC World News and deputy head of the BBC Newsroom.
