Virgin Atlantic’s ‘Be Yourself’ campaign features RuPaul’s Drag Race judge and LGBTQ+ supporter Michelle Visage as its ambassador to a more inclusive future.
As part of its new inclusive policy, the airline will allow its in-flight crew to choose either its iconic red skirt uniforms or gender-neutral suits.
“As the mother of a non-binary child, and as an ally to the LGBTQ+ community, these efforts by Virgin Atlantic to further inclusivity for its people are extremely important and personal to me,” Michelle Visage said in a statement.
“People feel empowered when they are wearing what best represents them, and this gender identity policy allows people to embrace who they are and bring their full selves to work.” Michelle Visage went on.
In response to protests from transgender individuals, the airline will adopt the following practices: implementing optional pronoun badges, implementing a gender-neutral ticketing system, and mandating inclusionary training for employees.
Pronoun badges can be collected at the airport check-in desk or the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse exclusive to premium ticket holders.
Not only are passports being issued that bear the title ‘U’ or ‘X’ in addition to ‘M’, but also ‘Mx’, in place of Mr and Mrs, respectively.
Virgin says embracing individuality increases employee happiness and well-being. It calls itself “the most inclusive airline in the skies”.
This new policy by Virgin Atlantic has come as it previously removed the need for staff to hide visible tattoos and made makeup for females optional.
In a press statement, Juha Jarvinen stressed the importance of allowing employees to be themselves.
