Playing Career

Alan Smith is a former professional footballer renowned for his goalscoring ability, particularly during his time at Arsenal. He began his career at non-league Alvechurch before signing with Leicester City in 1982.

At Leicester, he formed a formidable strike partnership with Gary Lineker, scoring 13 goals in his first season and helping the club secure promotion to the First Division. Over five seasons, he netted 84 goals in 217 appearances before joining Arsenal in 1987.

Smith became a key figure at Arsenal, winning two League Championships, the FA Cup, the Football League Cup (1993 ‘Cup Double’), and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1994. He was Arsenal’s top scorer for four consecutive seasons and the First Division’s top scorer in 1988–89 with 23 goals.

Known for his sportsmanship, he received just one yellow card throughout his entire career. His most memorable goals include:

  • Scoring in Arsenal’s famous 1989 title-clinching victory against Liverpool.
  • A hat-trick against Manchester United on 6 May 1991.
  • The winning goal in the 1994 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup Final against Parma.

Broadcasting Career

After retiring, Smith transitioned into football media and is now a regular co-commentator and pundit for Sky Sports. He has been a main co-commentator for Premier League games, particularly after Andy Gray’s departure.

In 2011, he commentated on the Champions League final alongside Martin Tyler and was announced as Tyler’s commentary partner for EA Sports’ FIFA 12 and later editions of the popular video game series.
