Four-Time Olympic Gold Medallist and Distinguished Broadcaster
Sir Matthew Pinsent (Matthew Clive Pinsent, CBE) is one of Britain’s most distinguished athletes, celebrated for winning gold medals at four consecutive Olympic Games. As an English rower, he achieved remarkable success, amassing 10 world championship gold medals and establishing himself as an iconic figure in the sport.
Matthew began his international career at the Junior World Rowing Championships in 1987, making his mark by winning the junior coxless pairs with Tim Foster in 1988. His Olympic journey culminated in 2000, where he secured gold as part of a formidable coxless four alongside rowing legends Steve Redgrave, James Cracknell, and Tim Foster. Prior to his triumph in Sydney, he was featured in a BBC documentary titled Gold Fever, which chronicled the team’s journey leading up to the Olympics.
At one point, Pinsent held the record for the largest lung capacity recorded for a sportsman, measuring an impressive 8.5 litres. His contributions to the sport extended beyond the water; he was elected to the International Olympic Committee’s Athletics Commission in 2001.
In 2004, he published his biography, A Lifetime In Race, and announced his retirement from rowing on 30 November 2004. His achievements earned him the title of Knight Bachelor in the New Year’s Honours list on 31 December 2004, having previously been appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 1993 and raised to Commander in 2001. He also received the Thomas Keller Medal from the International Rowing Federation in 2005.
Since retiring, Matthew has transitioned into broadcasting, working with the BBC as a sports bulletin presenter and reporter.
