Len Goodman is an award-winning dancer and television presenter, best known for his role as head judge on the popular dance show Strictly Come Dancing.
Dancing Career
Len Goodman’s journey into dance began later than most. Born in London, he moved to Blackfen at the age of six and initially had a passion for cricket while attending Westwood Secondary Modern School. After a brief career as a welder, he took up dancing at the age of 19. His natural talent quickly emerged, and he turned professional. Goodman went on to win numerous competitions, capping his career with a victory at the British Championships in Blackpool in his late twenties. He retired from dancing shortly after, having made a lasting mark on the world of ballroom.
Goodman was honoured with the prestigious Carl Alan Award for his outstanding contributions to dance.
Strictly Come Dancing
Len Goodman became a household name as the head judge on Strictly Come Dancing, a role he held across all series of the show. His authoritative yet approachable judging style, along with his signature catchphrase “It gets a ten from Len,” endeared him to audiences. He was part of the esteemed panel alongside Darcey Bussell, Bruno Tonioli, and Craig Revel Horwood.
In addition to his UK role, Goodman also served as head judge on the US version of the show, Dancing with the Stars, from its inception in 2005.
Documentaries & Presenting Roles
Len Goodman has ventured into television presenting beyond dance competitions. In 2015, he hosted a three-part BBC One documentary marking the 100th anniversary of the Titanic.
In 2013, he presented Len Goodman’s Dance Band Days on BBC Four, a programme exploring the history of dance bands. Later that year, he co-hosted Dancing Cheek to Cheek with Lucy Worsley, a three-part series that aired on BBC Four.
In 2015, he teamed up with Ainsley Harriott for the BBC show Len and Ainsley’s Big Food Adventure, a 10-part series in which the two explored global cuisine across England and Wales.
