Career Background:

Katya’s journalistic journey began in Vienna with the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation, reporting across Central and Eastern Europe and the Balkans, including coverage of the Kosovo war.

Joining the BBC in 2000, she covered European affairs as both presenter and roving reporter, later becoming the BBC’s Madrid correspondent in 2003 and the Middle East correspondent in 2006, based in Jerusalem.

Named the BBC’s Europe Editor in 2014, Katya co-presented the award-winning Brexitcast podcast during the Brexit process.

Awards:

Katya’s expertise has earned her numerous accolades, including honorary doctorates from Bristol University and the University of London. She has been named Broadcast Journalist of the Year at the Political Society Awards 2018 and received the Broadcast Journalist of the Year award from the London Press Club in 2019. Additionally, she was honored with the British Journalism Review and University of Westminster’s Charles Wheeler award for Outstanding Contribution to Broadcast Journalism in 2019.

The Brexitcast podcast, which Katya co-hosted, received the Listeners Choice award at the British podcast awards 2019. In 2022, Bristol University named her their Arts and Media Alumnus of the Year.
