Kamal Ahmed is a seasoned journalist with over three decades of experience covering economics, business, politics, media, and the royal beat. He has worked for four national newspapers and held the position of Editorial Director at BBC News in 2019.
Career Highlights:
Kamal’s career journey began with local newspapers in Scotland before moving to Scotland on Sunday. He later joined The Guardian as Royal Correspondent and Media Editor, followed by roles at The Observer as Political Editor and Executive Editor, News. Under his leadership, The Observer won Newspaper of the Year in 2006.
After a brief hiatus from journalism, Kamal served as Group Director of Communications for the Equality and Human Rights Commission before returning to the press as Business Editor for The Daily Telegraph in 2009. He joined BBC News in 2014 as Business Editor and later became Economics Editor before assuming the role of Editorial Director.
Media Advocacy:
Kamal is actively involved in advocating for media freedom as the Vice-President of the Society of Editors. He also serves as a trustee of Media Trust, an organization dedicated to empowering marginalized groups and young people in the media and creative industries.
The News Movement:
Following his departure from the BBC, Kamal co-founded and became Editor-in-Chief of The News Movement, a new media business headquartered in London and New York. Kamal authored “The Life and Times of a very British Man,” an autobiographical account of his experiences growing up as a mixed-race child in the 1970s.
