Johnny Vegas is an English actor and surrealist comedian renowned for his distinctive stand-up routines and memorable performances in television shows such as Ideal and Benidorm.
Born Michael Pennington, Johnny was raised as a Roman Catholic and attended St Joseph’s College in Upholland, a boarding-school seminary, with aspirations of becoming a priest. However, he left after just four terms, feeling homesick and yearning for a different path.
Johnny made his television debut in 1996 on Win, Lose or Draw, where he expressed his desire to pursue a career in comedy while introducing his stage name, “Johnny Vegas.” His unique persona quickly captured attention.
In 2001, Vegas gained widespread recognition as Al in a series of memorable adverts for ITV Digital, featuring a puppet named Monkey, voiced by Ben Miller. He reprised this role in 2007 for PG Tips, solidifying his status in British pop culture.
In 2008, Johnny starred in and co-wrote the BBC Radio 4 sitcom Night Class, where he played a former Butlin’s redcoat teaching pottery evening classes. The sitcom was well-received, finishing as a runner-up for Best Comedy at the Sony Radio Academy Awards.
Vegas portrayed Moz in the BBC Three sitcom Ideal from 2005 to 2011, earning acclaim for his performance. He also played Geoff “The Oracle” Maltby in the ITV sitcom Benidorm between 2007 and 2009. In 2012, he took on the role of Mr. Croombe in the television adaptation of David Walliams’ children’s novel Mr Stink, and in 2014, he voiced Fat Baz in the animated sitcom Warren United on ITV4. He participated in ITV’s documentary series Secrets from the Clink, showcasing his versatility as a performer.
Johnny has appeared in several films, including The Virgin of Liverpool (2003) as Jackie Symes, Cheeky as Alf Prince, and Blackball as Trevor. He voiced characters in Sex Lives of the Potato Men, Terkel in Trouble, and The Harry Hill Movie.
