Derek Redmond

Former GB Athletic Legend

Derek Redmond is celebrated as a former British athletics icon, whose illustrious career spanned the 1980s and 1990s. Renowned for breaking the British 400m record twice, he emerged as a formidable competitor against American athletes dominating the event.

Career Highlights

Derek was a key member of the British 4 × 400m relay squad, winning gold medals at the 1991 World Championships, 1986 European Championships, and the 1986 Commonwealth Games. He is perhaps most famously remembered for his heart-wrenching performance in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics 400m semi-final, which was later voted the 3rd greatest Olympic moment in history by viewers of NBC in 2012. Considered a strong contender for a gold medal in the final, Derek faced a devastating setback when he tore his hamstring 250 meters into the semi-final. Undeterred by the pain, he courageously got back up and crossed the finish line, aided by his devoted father, who had rushed past security to support him. Following his athletic career, Derek also played professional basketball for the Birmingham Bullets and rugby union for both Coventry RFC and Stowe RFC.
