Chris Addison is an acclaimed stand-up comedian, writer, and actor from Manchester, known for his sharp wit and satirical humour. He began performing stand-up comedy in 1995, winning the City Life Comedian of the Year Award in that same year, a prestigious comedy competition in the North West of England. Addison has made a significant mark in both stand-up and television, including roles in the political satire The Thick of It and its spin-off film In the Loop.


Early Career and Stand-Up Comedy

Chris Addison’s first solo show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe was in 1998, where he was nominated for Best Newcomer at the Perrier Awards. This was just the beginning of a successful run at the festival, where he would continue to bring innovative shows, earning two Perrier Award nominations for 2004’s Civilisation and 2005’s Atomicity.

His stand-up is known for its lecture-style delivery, blending sharp observations with humorous storytelling. This unique style has earned him a dedicated following in the UK and beyond.


Television and Film Career

Addison is perhaps best known for his role as Ollie in the BBC Two political satire The Thick of It. His portrayal of the ambitious but often hapless political advisor resonated with audiences. He reprised this role in the spin-off film In the Loop (2009), directed by Armando Iannucci.

In addition to his acting, Addison co-created and starred in the BBC Two sitcom Lab Rats, which was well-received for its quirky and comedic take on university life.


Writing & Radio Work

Addison has built a successful writing career alongside his performance work. From 2003 to 2005, he wrote a fortnightly finance column for The Guardian, entitled “Funny Money”. His ability to blend humour with complex topics was a hallmark of this column.

In 2004, Addison co-wrote and co-starred in the political satire The Department on BBC Radio 4, alongside John Oliver and Andy Zaltzman. The show ran for three series before its end in 2006.

He also recorded Chris Addison’s Civilisation for Radio 4 in 2006, adapting his Edinburgh show into an acclaimed radio special. On Radio 4, he hosted the comedy news satire show 7 Day Sunday from 2009 to 2011, bringing his witty commentary to current affairs.


Television Appearances and Comedy Panel Shows

Addison’s television appearances are numerous. He was a guest panellist on Mock the Week eleven times during 2010 and 2011, before becoming a full-time panellist in September 2011. He has also appeared on Have I Got News for You, Would I Lie to You, and 8 Out of 10 Cats.

In 2011, he hosted a special Comedy Takeover on the Dave channel, curating and presenting a selection of comedy shows. Additionally, he took part in the Uncaged Monkeys tour, alongside famous figures like Professor Brian Cox and Dara Ó Briain, bringing science and comedy together in a live show.


Books

Chris Addison has also authored two books, both published by Hodder and Stoughton:

  • Cautionary Tales for Grown-Ups (2006)
  • It Wasn’t Me: Why Everybody is to Blame and You’re Not (2008)

These books showcase Addison’s comedic take on everyday situations and human behaviour, further cementing his reputation as a master of observational humour.
