Billy Monger is a British racing driver known for his impressive journey through motorsport, having competed in British F4 during 2016 and 2017. He is affectionately nicknamed Billy Whizz, a reference to the character from the British comic The Beano.
Billy’s racing journey began in karting, where he competed extensively across the UK and the Channel Islands. He then transitioned to Ginetta Juniors, where he achieved considerable success. However, in April 2017, Monger was critically injured in a tragic collision at Donington Park, resulting in the amputation of both of his legs—one above the knee and the other below the knee.
After extensive treatment and therapy, Monger made a remarkable return to competition in November 2017. His resilience and determination earned him the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Helen Rollason Award in 2018, recognizing his outstanding achievement in the face of adversity.
From 2019 onwards, he has contributed as an analyst for Channel 4 F1 and has competed in the Euroformula Open Championship with Carlin Motorsport. Monger’s tenacity paid off when he secured his first single-seater race win at the 2019 Pau Grand Prix.
