Jim Rosenthal is a highly regarded figure in television and radio sports broadcasting, with a career spanning several decades. Known for his distinctive voice and approachable style, Rosenthal has become one of the most familiar faces in sports media, particularly in the worlds of football, boxing, and Formula 1.
Born and raised in Oxford, Jim Rosenthal’s early education took place at Josca’s Preparatory School and Magdalen College School. His career in journalism began at the Oxford Mail, before he made his mark in BBC local and national radio. Rosenthal’s broadcasting career truly took off when he joined BBC Radio 2, where he presented the iconic Sports Report for several years. It was also during his time at BBC Radio Birmingham that he was on duty during the tragic Birmingham Pub Bombings, an event that showcased his professionalism under pressure.
Jim Rosenthal’s television career began in August 1980 when he joined ITV. Over the years, he became known for his football, boxing, and athletics coverage, in addition to his work on various minor sports. Rosenthal has been a key member of the ITV team covering the FIFA World Cup since 1982, as well as the Olympic Games.
One of his most significant roles was as the anchor of Formula 1 coverage on ITV for eight years, where he presented over 150 Grand Prix events from 1997 onwards. Rosenthal’s direct questioning of figures in the sport and his engaging style made him a fan favourite.
In 2010, he provided coverage of the World Cup opening ceremony for ITV, and later, he also presented the Rugby World Cup for the OSN network, which is broadcast across the Middle East and Africa.
Jim Rosenthal’s work has earned him numerous accolades. He was named Royal Television Society Sports Presenter of the Year in both 1997 and 1999, as well as winning various other awards both in the UK and internationally. He was also the main anchor for ITV’s BAFTA-winning coverage of the 2003 Rugby World Cup, which saw him travel to Australia for the final.
In 2005, Rosenthal returned to the world of boxing, becoming the presenter for ITV’s Champions League football coverage and their boxing broadcasts. He continued to gain recognition for his work, becoming the lead presenter for BoxNation, a dedicated boxing channel, in 2011.
In addition to his domestic broadcasting career, Jim Rosenthal’s international presence is notable. He regularly hosted the UEFA Gala Dinner in Monaco, a high-profile football event broadcast globally.
