Andrew Castle is a former British tennis player and a well-known face in British broadcasting. Castle represented Britain at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games and the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, and was regularly ranked the number 1 player in Britain. He turned professional in 1986, after completing a Marketing degree on an athletic scholarship in the United States. During his tennis career, Castle won three tour doubles titles and reached the mixed doubles final at the 1987 Australian Open.
Following his retirement from professional tennis in 1992, Castle transitioned into broadcasting. He began his career as a commentator and presenter for BSkyB, and in September 2000, he became a key presenter for GMTV, where he spent ten years on the famous GMTV sofa.
Castle is perhaps best known for his role as part of the Bafta-nominated BBC tennis team. His calm and insightful commentary has earned him the lead commentator role for all the men’s singles finals since 2003, often alongside tennis legends such as John McEnroe, Boris Becker, Jimmy Connors, Tim Henman, John Lloyd, and Sue Barker.
In 2008, Castle participated in the sixth series of the celebrity dance competition, Strictly Come Dancing, showcasing his versatility outside of tennis and broadcasting.
Outside of tennis and broadcasting, Castle is deeply committed to charitable work. He is a Patron of Shooting Star Chase, which supports families at Christopher’s Hospice in Surrey, and has supported several other charities, including Brainwave, The Dan Maskell Tennis Trust, Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, Macmillan Cancer Care, the NSPCC, and Clic Sargent Cancer Care for Children.
In 2009, Castle became a Patron of the Festival4Stars talent competition, where his daughter, Georgina Castle, was a runner-up in the national finals on two occasions.
Castle remains active in the sporting world, representing Surrey at the over-45s level in squash and continuing to play representative tennis around the globe. His passion for sport extends to his charitable work and personal interests.
